Did you know? If you have the VCS deficit, the potential for biotoxin exposure and don’t have other exposures or medical conditions that could explain the deficit, our data indicate that the response to toxin-binding therapy is over 90%.

Functional Acuity Contrast Test F.A.C.T®, Stereo Optical Co., Inc., Chicago, IL.US Patent #s: 4,365,873 & 5,414,479.

The Near Vision F.A.C.T. 101 is the system used clinically and in research to measure visual contrast sensitivity (VCS).

The system includes:
- One Near Chart card with a holder calibrated to keep the card at the appropriate distance from the eyes (18").
- The high photographic quality card contains a 5 row by 9 column matrix of stimuli. The stimuli are sinusoidal gratings (dark and light bars) which decrease in contrast in 0.15 log unit steps from left to right. The spatial frequency (bar size) progresses in one octave steps (i.e., a factor of two) from the top row, A, to the fourth row, D, and then in a ½ octave step to the bottom row, E.
- The spatial frequencies are 1.5, 3, 6, 12, and 18 cycles per degree of visual arc at the viewing distance of 18".
- The F.A.C.T. accurately measures VCS under normal office lighting conditions (20-70 foot lamberts or 68-240 cd/m2).
- Also included are an instruction manual, record forms, and a 2 color pen (use one color to record left eye data and the other for right eye data).

Prior to launching a new version of this website in June, 2002, the earlier version had been online for about a year and a half. Over 3,600 registered users had taken the preliminary and VCS tests. About half of the test results were positive for potential chronic, neurotoxin-induced illness. We do not know exactly how many of those used our treatment protocol with their local physician, or the outcome for all that did. We do know, however, that many used the protocol with success, and that many others were successfully treated by Dr. Shoemaker or another physician.
